Scheme toimprove junction welcomed

A £750,000 road improvement scheme for Upper Ballinderry set to begin later this year has been welcomed by local politicians.

The scheme will bring improvements to the A26 Glenavy Road at the junction of Lower Ballinderry and Ballinderry Road in Upper Ballinderry.

Jeffrey Donaldson MP said: “We had a number of meetings with Roads Service about the need for a junction improvement scheme at Upper Ballinderry and these had been positive. The news of the investment in this area is to be greatly welcomed as the local residents have been waiting for these improvements for many years.

“This junction improvement scheme on what is a very busy stretch of road leading to the International Airport will help improve road safety and traffic flows and it is anticipated that this work will begin on site in the autumn”.

DUP Councillor Thomas Beckett said: “This was a major issue with local residents who were frightened to use the junction not to mention the major hold ups at peak times for traffic trying to get out of the village. This junction had become dangerous and difficult for school buses to cross, something had to be done.”
