School carrying out '˜full investigation' after bus incident

A full investigation is underway at Ballyclare High School after footage emerged of pupils being dropped off from a bus on an off-slip of the M2.

The footage was filmed by a car dash-cam on the Sandyknowes country-bound off-slip on Wednesday.

Cars are seen travelling down the inside lane towards Mallusk in the footage which was shot at rush hour. The car recording the video, also in the inside lane, then slows and stops as an Ulsterbus in the middle lane allows a number of passengers off.

Three passengers, who appear to be schoolchildren, are then seen exiting the bus before quickly moving across to the grass verge before walking towards Sandyknowes roundabout.

It has since come to light that the pupils in the footage are students at Ballyclare High School.

Speaking to the Times, Principal for the school, Dr Michelle Rainey said: “The safety and well-being of our pupils remains our top priority at all times. We are giving this matter our urgent attention and speaking to all those concerned internally and carrying out a full investigation.”

Commenting on the incident, a Translink spokesperson said: “We take safety breaches extremely seriously and we have already begun a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident.”

The incident comes only days after the PSNI ran a road safety campaign, ‘Safer Roads.’
