School children enjoy free trip on new Larne train

The special return service between Larne and Belfast was part of Translink’s Try the Train campaign, which aims to encourage more people to use rail services.

The children were joined by pupils from other east Antrim schools located close to the Larne line.

All 150 passengers enjoyed on-board entertainment and on arrival they watched a free performance of French dance piece Traverse in the Waterfront Hall as part of the Belfast Children’s Festival.

Principal of Olderfleet Primary, Robert McCombe, said: “Our year six class was delighted to have the opportunity to travel on one of the new trains from our local station, Larne Harbour, which is a short walk from our school, to Belfast. Our children are aware of the benefits of train travel and certainly prefer to take the train and enjoy the fantastic views along the journey.”

Speaking about the special day out, Translink NI Railways brand manager, Louise Scott said: “It’s important we educate people from an early age about the benefits of using sustainable transport in order to grow passenger numbers even further and secure a bright future for rail travel in Northern Ireland.

“Almost all Larne line services are now operated with new Class 4000 trains with all 20 due to be in service this autumn. Passengers can enjoy enhanced comfort and accessibility features, letting you sit back and relax or even catch up on some work while avoiding frustrating traffic congestion.

“Ever-increasing car fuel and running costs also mean the train is cost-effective travel choice,” she said.
