School Links celebrated at NWRC

Pupils from a number of local secondary schools were presented with awards and certificates recently for courses they have completed at the Strand Road Campus of North West Regional College.

The pupils have been attending the College for the past two years as part of the Vocational Enhancement Programme to undertake courses in Hairdressing & Beauty, Engineering, Brickwork, Joinery, Plumbing, Catering, and Motor Vehicle.  These programmes have not only given the Year 12 pupils work-related experience which will be valuable for possible employment opportunities, but also provided a recognised qualification in addition to their academic studies in their own school.

College Principal and Chief Executive Seamus Murphy presented the pupils with their certificates of completion. Speaking at the ceremony Mr Murphy noted the College’s commitment to supporting schools in widening access to vocational qualifications that provide pupils with work-ready skills. “Learning has never been as important as it is in today’s changing world,” he added, “across the North West you are among 1000 post-primary pupils who attend the College to gain vocational qualifications and skills, that are designed to meet the needs of the local economy.”

“This event is one of highlights in our calendar, and we are delighted to be presenting so many young people with awards. This ceremony highlights the strong working partnership we have with the post-primary schools from the local area through the Foyle Learning Community. We congratulate all the pupils for their efforts at our College, and wish them continued success in the future.”

Pupils spend one day per week at the College, while other schools in the local area avail of the College’s courses on site in their own school.
