David Ross was hurt while playing for Wallace High School last Wednesday afternoon in a Third XV Schools’ Cup game against St Columb’s College in Londonderry.

He was treated on the pitch before being taken to Altnagelvin Hospital shortly after 3pm. The Upper Sixth student was later transferred to Royal Victoria Hospital where he underwent surgery that evening for serious neck and spinal injuries.

It’s understood David was injured during open play (not a scrum or line-out) in the Third XV Schools’ Cup game at St Columb’s.

Having been in intensive care in a critical condition, a spokesperson for the Royal told the ‘MAIL’ on Tuesday that David remained in ICU but was in a “stable condition”.

On Saturday the 18-year-old, who works part time in Supervalu in Moira, posted a status update on Facebook which read, “Just a quick update: things are going okay. Had a pretty nasty accident, it’s going to be a long way back but I’m on the right track. Thank you to everyone for all their support.”

No one at Wallace High School wished to make any comment when contacted by the Lurgan Mail.
