Schools come together for successful Performing Arts class

AS the academic year came to an end, members of the BTEC Level 2 Performing Arts class in Laurelhill Community College took time to reflect on their first full year of their course.

The Performing Arts course is unique in comparison to the other GCSEs which the students study, as the BTEC is taught as part of the Lisburn Learning Community. Laurelhill, along with three other schools in the city, formed this community to offer additional subjects at GCSE.

Students from Dunmurry High, Friends’, Laurelhill and St. Patrick’s all attend Laurelhill every Tuesday for class after school.

Laurelhill Year 11 pupil Alex Morrow said: “It has been challenging at times in addition to the other subjects which I am studying, however the practical nature of the course has made it fun and engaging. Plus I’ve made eleven new friends who I never would have met had I not signed up for the course.”

Performing Arts teacher Elaine Kelly is delighted with the results so far.

“I am truly delighted at the success of the first year of this course,” she said. “The pupils have shown great dedication and enthusiasm throughout the year and it has been a pleasure to teach students from other schools around the Lisburn area. Also the support from the staff and parents of the students from all schools in the Learning Community has been fantastic. It has been a great start to a great partnership between the schools in Lisburn.”

The course is also being offered to Year 10 pupils in Lisburn who are due to embark upon their study at GCSE with high hopes of more success.
