Mrs Schofield also presented the school’s principal, Geoff Dunn, with £1,000 towards additional science resources.

The award honours Mrs Gibson’s work in developing the Community of Scientific Enquiry approach in partnership with the University of Ulster, Coleraine, designed to stimulate children’s interest in the world of science through the use of practical experiments which generate questions.

Mrs. Gibson hopes to expand this project in the near future so that children all of ages can be actively involved in scientific reasoning using this approach.

She explained: “This simple yet innovative approach to science has helped to widen the scientific vocabulary and understanding of our children.

“They lead the enquiries with confidence and interest, offering high level explanations for what they observe.”

Headmaster Geoff Dunn said: “This is yet another aspect of school life where Ballysally Primary School excels.

“Changes to the Revised Curriculum have meant that science is often not regarded as a key skill to be developed in primary schools.

“However, this award merely highlights this school’s commitment to the promotion and development of science.
