Scouts get together for worldwide jamboree

Scouts from Ballyclare, Carrickfergus and Jordanstown have joined forces to link up with scouts from 30 countries around the world.

The 56th JOTA (Jamboree of the Air) and the 17th JOTI (Jamboree of the Internet) took place at the weekend.

The scouts made use of the superb facilities of the Northern Ireland Scout Activity Centre at Crawfordsburn and enlisted the help of the Greenisland Electronic and Amateur Radio Society (GEARS) to talk to scouts from countries as far afield as Japan, Port Stanley (Falkland Islands), Russia, Slovenia, UAE, Norway for a real international meeting.

The scouts from East Antrim, when not on the radio or internet, put their free time to good use by learning communication skills from a different era - semaphore and Morse code.

Organiser of the JOTA/JOTI weekend, Mick Lynn, scout leader of 1st Ballyclare Scouts, expressed thanks to the team from GEARS and the Crawfordsburn Scout Activity Centre wardens for not only their assistance in helping the scouts talk to scouts from around the world but helping the East Antrim Scouts gain ‘Communicator’, ‘Global Challenge’ and ‘International Partnership’ Badges’.
