Scrap lorry carries off festive lighting in Magherafelt

Three strands of Christmas street lighting was were caught by a scrap lorry as it made its way through Magherafelt town centre, the local District Council heard.

The lorry caught the festoon cable in Market Street and dragged it down Rainey Street.

The incident happened just before the all the festive displays and trees were taken down by council workers.

Director of Operations Mr Andrew Cassells told the monthly meeting that none of the lighting could be salvaged.

“At the time of the incident the town centre CCTV system was not functioning,” said Mr Cassells.

The Christmas street lights are usually removed in all the towns in the district before the end of January or early February depending on the weather conditions.

The decorations are then put into storage for next year.
