Screening programme carried out at school

A special cardiac screening programme for people aged 14 '“ 35 was carried out in Ballyclare High School over the weekend.

The event, organised by Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), ran from 9am until 5pm on Saturday, March 4 and Sunday, March 5. The Rashee Road school hosted this clinic, entitled the ‘Jamie Gault Clinic’, in memory of former pupil, Jamie, who died of sudden death syndrome when he was a pupil at the school 30 years ago.

The CRY clinic was offered to current pupils at the school, 220 of whom will be attending to receive an electrocardiogram (ECG), the results of which will be examined by a doctor. A follow up echocardiogram may be required and any results which suggest abnormalities will be referred to a leading cardiac expert. The purpose of the clinic is to uncover any young people at risk from sudden cardiac death so that they may receive treatment.
