Jim Campbell suggested sites at The Bridewell or Polepatrick Cemetery and Park as suitable locations for a memorial.

His comments come ahead of Saturday’s ‘Day of Reflection’ for World War One taking place in the south Derry town.

The event, which has secured National Lottery funding, is being organised by Royal British Legion branches in Magherafelt, Castledawson and Upperlands.

Aimed at the entire community it will be a day for all the family, incorporating a service of remembrance, for those who were killed during the war 100 years ago.

Councillor Campbell said he has begun the process of getting a memorial and hopes the new Mid-Ulster Council will decide the matter when it gets up and running next year.

He also suggested a book listing the names of the people from the district who died during the war. He was not in favour of the memorial detailing names.
