SDLP election candidate speaks out against pylons

SDLP North Antrim representative Connor Duncan has called on SONI, the contractor responsible for the high voltage electricity grid, to reconsider plans which would see large electricity pylons constructed close to residential homes in Rasharkin.

The plans are a significant departure from those included in a consultation which did not affect the Portna Road area nor local residents.

He said: “I have met with local residents in Rasharkin and the Portna Road area about the Brockaghboy 110kV Renewables Connection Project following significant concerns raised about changes to the electricity line route. Their concerns are absolutely justified as it now seems that the original plans have been altered and that large electricity pylons are planned very close to this residential area.

“Local residents were largely content with the original route which was consulted on and that would have kept the lines in unpopulated areas. A late change is not acceptable and will be vigorously opposed by local people. I have made representations to SONI and the consultants making the views of people in Rasharkin clear.

“I would encourage anyone with concerns to get in touch and I will be more than happy to facilitate dialogue to have this issue resolved as soon as possible.”
