The Mid Ulster MLA, accompanied by Cookstown SDLP Councillor, Tony Quinn, viewed the road this week after local residents had highlighted their fears about the safety of the road surface.

Mr McGlone said, “A number of local residents had contacted my office with their fears about the safety of the surface of the Drumenny Road, in the area between Gort Road and Derrychrin Road.

“There has been significant subsidence in this area where the edge of the road is crumbling away to a steep drop. In one case a lorry dropped in over the edge of the road”

Cllr Quinn added, “It is believed that the damage has been caused by the significant amount of heavy vehicles that have been using this road over a period of time.

“After viewing the road surface for ourselves we are quite clear that there is a potential risk to pedestrians and drivers.”

Mr McGlone ended by saying, “We have contacted Roads Service with an urgent request for action on the Drumenny Road and for an official assessment of the safety of the road surface. I have subsequently spoken to the local office about this deteriorating condition.

“We will continue to press for immediate action to be taken to repair the road surface along this stretch of the Drumenny Road.

“Our rural road network is an important link for the local community and a vital component of the local economy. We cannot allow it to deteriorate into an unsafe condition.”
