Seamus brings Torch to the Bann

As the torch makes its way to the local waterway it will be in the safe hands of an extraordinary person, as the Bann Rowing Club head coach, Seamus Reynolds (PICTURED RIGHT) is the nominated torch bearer for the relay stretch on the river.

The Bann Rowing Club is thrilled to be taking part in this once in a lifetime event particularly as several of the Club’s successful team members are part of the GB Olympic Rowing Team.

Festivities kick off with a bang in the Town Centre on the Monday, with Downtown Radio broadcasting live from Coleraine Town Hall. There will be a multitude of activities taking place including an exciting FREE Olympic Craft Workshop where kids can make their own torches and bring them along to a “Sports Comes to Town” event in Christie Park. Families can come and see the ice rink in the park and try out other great sporting opportunities that are all happening on the day.

After its journey along the River Bann, the Olympic Torch travels onward by road to Articlave and Castlerock. The Torch bids farewell to the Borough at the iconic Downhill beach, where spectators can enjoy an incredible display of flaming arrows from the Northern Flights Archery Club; a spectacular sight!

Mayor of Coleraine, Alderman Maurice Bradley, said “The programme is very exciting and people can take advantage of the many free events on offer throughout the Borough.

“Council will be giving live time information over the two days with their new facebook and twitter sites, so make sure you log on through Council’s website. Monday June 4th will be a day not to be missed as the Olympic Torch takes to the River Bann, so come along and be part of something special.”
