There were doubts the 32-year-old would return for another season following Tyrone’s defeat to Kerry in the All-Ireland semi-final last month.

However, the former Footballer of the Year has now confirmed he will return for a 14th year with the Red Hands.

Tyrone reached the All-Ireland semi-final this season, having recovered from a shaky start when eliminated by Donegal in Ulster to make a charge through the Qualifiers. There they saw off Limerick, Meath, Tipperary, Sligo and Monaghan before ultimately falling to Kerry by 0-18 to 1-11 at Croke Park.

Cavanagh has won three All-Irelands with Tyrone - his first coming in his debut season in 2003.
