Search for families of local WW2 soldiers

Mr Glenfield, who runs a website entitled ‘The Second World War in Northern Ireland’, spends a large amount of his time researching the contributionNorthern Ireland made to the war effort.

The historian recently returned from a research trip to Germany and he is hoping to find the relatives of some of the men whose graves he discovered during the visit.

“I recently visited Berlin and Hamburg in Germany and whilst there I visited the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemeteries where Allied Servicemen have been buried,” he explained. “Prior to visiting I had researched the names of men from Northern Ireland and have photographed the headstone of Private William Joseph Cushnie who was serving in the Pioneer Corps and is buried in Hamburg. He was the Husband of Isabella Cushnie and the Son of Mr and Mrs William Cushnie from The Maze near Lisburn.”

Mr Glenfield also photographed the grave of Sergeant John James Caves, who is buried in Berlin. He was serving with the Glider Pilot Regiment, Army Air Corps and was the Son of Jack and Ann Caves from Lisburn.

The third local man that Mr Glenfield is hoping to find out more about is Sergeant John Ritchie McDowell, who was a Flight Engineer serving with 101 Squadron, Royal Air Force and was the son of John and Mary Ann McDowell from Hillsborough.
