Search launched for North West Pensioner of the Year

The search is on for this year’s North West Pensioner of the Year.
On 13th September 2013, 502 (Ulster) Squadron Royal Auxiliary Air Force force formally launched itself in Northern Ireland, welcoming the Northern Irish media, Royal Air Force personelle and local ex Servicemen onto Aldergrove Flying Station to publicise and commemorate its formation. The day included demonstrations of the squadrons capabilities, the highlighting of the squadrons key figures, aswell as the arrival of 2 Tornado jet aircraft from RAF Marham and a Hawk Jet trainer from RAF Leeming. Along with Air Marshall Timo Anderson, other guests included former local pilot Dick Spencer.

502 (Ulster) Squadron will be a multi trade RAF Reserve Squadron made up of part time volunteer reservists totalling 130 in all, with men and women from all over Northern Ireland being legible for all posts. Reservists will commit to a minimum of 27 days a year, with competitive pay, recieving high standards of military training that will be beneficial and reversable into the civillian roles. Launched by Older People North West (Age Concern Derry), the organisation considers the it essential that older people are made to feel that they are vital facets of that society and their opinions are valued, and the Pensioner of the Year Award is one practical way that Older People North West, seeks to promote and foster a positive image of older age and to discourage the stereotyping of older people.

Members of the public are urged to participate and nominate an older person for this award.

To nominate simply request a nomination form from Age Concern Derry, Malvern House, Chapel Road, Londonderry, and provide details of the nominee and the reason why you feel they are worthy of this prestigious award. To qualify the nominee must be over 60 years and living in the Derry City Council Area. Nominations can be made by organisations, groups or individuals. Completed nomination forms must be returned by 1pm on Friday, November 22.

Each nomination received is very carefully analysed and assessed by an independent panel of judges with no association with the organisation promoting the event.
