Second man to be charged with bomb attack

A SECOND man will appear in court this morning charged in connection with the bomb attack at Strand Road on August 3.

The 53-year-old man has been charged with a number of offences including possession of firearms and ammunition with intent to endanger life and possession of a prohibited weapon.

The man has also been charged with possession of firearms and ammunition in suspicious circumstances, and two counts of possession of imitation firearms with intent to cause fear.

On Friday past, 42-year-old Phillip O'Donnell from Baldrick Crescent in the Rosemount area of Londonderry appeared in court charged with 12 offences in relation to the attack.

The bomb on Tuesday, August 3, was a 200lb device which detonated close to Strand Road PSNI Station at approximately 3.20am. A taxi was hi jacked before the attack and the driver was ordered at gunpoint to drive the device to the area. No one was injured in the attack but substantial damage was caused to the area.

An organisation calling itself Oglaigh na hEireann later claimed responsibility for the attack.
