Sectarian crime rises - report shows

THE majority of sectarian crimes in Ballymoney are criminal damage to property, a report presented to the local District Policing Partnership has revealed.

In the period April to March 08/09 sectarian crimes totalled 52 while in the following period, the figure rose to 88, a variation of 69.2%. members of the Partnership heard at a meeting in the town last Wednesday.

Chief Inspector Magill commented: “Sectarianism is an issue for the community as a whole to resolve.

Police will investigate these crimes when reported and conduct patrols to prevent such crimes.

“Neighbourhood Officers continue to work within schools and the wider community to address issues of sectarianism, however, the Police alone cannot change peoples’ attitudes. The majority of sectarian crimes in Ballymoney are criminal damage to property.”
