Sectarian tensions high in Limavady

The offices are located in the towns Main Street.

Police say they were made aware of the blaze just before 10.30pm.

Sinn Fin Councillor on Limavady Borough Council, Brenda Chivers appealed for no retaliation in relation to the arson attack.

Mrs Chivers told the Sentinel: "We are just happy that no one was hurt, or worse, in the fire. It was more smoke damage than anything else. If this fire had've really took off it could have set alight the offices next door to the building."

"We are just appealing for calm. If anyone needs to speak with any our councillors please contact the Dungiven office and we can send somebody down to assist them."

But, indications are that sectarian tensions in the town are high following a second incident in the early hours of this morning (Thursday, July 8, 2010) when the Orange Hall in Catherine Street was damaged.

Police say that three men in their 20's are expected to appear at Limavady Magistrates Court on August 4 charged with criminal damages.

A police statement said: "The charges relate to damage caused to an Orange Hall in Catherine Street in Limavady during the early hours of Thursday, July 8. As usual the charges will be reviewed by the PPS."
