Security alert halts repairs

SECURITY alerts prevented repair crews restoring electric to hundreds of homes last week.

A viable device was made safe by the bomb squad last Wednesday at Eastway, Portadown Road.

The police closed the road for most of the night, opening again around 6am on Thursday morning (May 6).

Power cuts to homes in the Kilwilke area were prolonged because of the alert.

The power to over 2,300 homes was cut after an installation disk on a high voltage overhead power line was broken around 9.30pm.

Power was restored to most homes by 3.30am on Thursday morning with all those affected back on the grid by 6.30am.

A spokeswoman for NIE said: "Security alerts in the town prevented the power being restored earlier."
