Army bomb experts attended the scene and carried out a controlled explosion.

In a statement the PSNI later said that “nothing untoward” had been found.

Police sealed the area off just after the return parade at around 8pm.

A community centre was opened up for residents, however after the controlled explosion they were able to return to their homes.

One resident we spoke to said that the PSNI had been very helpful and apologetic for the inconvenience caused.

Meanwhile, local orangemen and bands enjoyed a ‘flagship’ Twelfth in Londonderry.

Three of the most senior Orangemen in the British Isles - the grand masters of England, Scotland and Ireland - took part in the demonstration.

Thousands of spectators watched 60 lodges and 40 bands march through the city.

The organisers of the Londonderry parade said the location was chosen to mark the Orange Order’s involvement in the UK City of Culture celebrations.

They said they were delighted to stage the flagship parade during “a very special year for the city”.

Police district commander Stephen Martin said preparations for the day had been made well in advance. He said there had been no major problems.
