Security up atrailway station

TRANSLINK has upped security at Londonderry railway station after civil engineering trains were attacked by vandals at the Waterside facility, the Rail Minister Danny Kennedy has revealed.

A scheduled £20k upgrade of the station’s CCTV system will also take place in the near future.

The Minister said increased vandalism at the station had prompted the security hike.

“Security provision hours have recently been extended at Londonderry Railway Station in response to increased vandalism occasioned to civil engineering trains which were stabled in Londonderry sidings.

“These civil engineering trains are being deployed to Londonderry to support the commencement of Track Safety Improvement Works now on-going between Londonderry and Coleraine.

“It would not be appropriate to detail the levels of security at any location other than to say it should be sufficient and proportionate to protect company assets and it is continually reviewed,” he stated.

Mr Kennedy would not provide details of the cost of security but said it should be sufficient and proportionate to protect company assets.

“Equally, all security is provided by designated companies who are selected through competitive tender, therefore we are satisfied with the requisite quality and costs of same,” he stated.

The Minister said the security provision was not related to a recent reduction in staffing.

Meanwhile, he also confirmed that “no building works are planned for Londonderry station other than routine maintenance and pre-planned renewals which will include the scheduled upgrade of CCTV systems at a cost of £20,000.”
