Selling the city

TOURISM Minister Arlene Foster sold Londonderry at a Northern Ireland 2012 ‘Your Time, Our Place’ event in Dublin last week.

The Minister was highlighting high profile events due to take place next year including the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, the Peace One Day Concert, and the Culture Company commissioned art installation by Deborah Warner.

Speaking at the launch in the former Irish Parliament building at College Green, Arlene Foster said: “The key Londonderry attractions are Peace One Day, an international music concert marking the opening of London 2012 Festival and Paralympic Games; a major new living artwork by Deborah Warner co-commissioned by Culture Company 2013 for the Cultural Olympiad; and the Clipper Round The World Yacht race homecoming leg, which will be welcomed by a four day maritime festival to celebrate the visit of the world’s longest race.”

She said she hoped the positive effects of NI 2012 will last far beyond the year itself and provide a great lead in to 2013, when Londonderry embraces the role of UK City of Culture.

Arlene Foster added: “With so many outstanding events, celebrations, commemorations and capital projects coming to completion, this is our time and our place to turn the tide and confidently put Northern Ireland on the global tourism map.

“We expect this programme to significantly boost visitor numbers well beyond 2012, generate an additional £140 million in revenue for the Northern Ireland economy and create over 3,500 jobs. This is an opportunity not to be missed and I would encourage everyone to get involved, be inspired and join in the spirit of 2012.”
