Service of thanksgiving for Mr Charles McAulay

A SERVICE of thanksgiving was recently held for the former Principal of Maghaberry Primary School, Mr Charles McAuley.

Tributes were paid to Mr McAuley at St Matthew’s, Broomhedge on June 30 where a large congregation was in attendance.

Mr McAuley, aged 86, grew up in Ballymoney. He was educated at Dalriada Grammer School and Stranmillis College. He taught in Billy, Abbotts Cross and Ballymacash Primary Schools, before moving to Maghaberry.

He was well liked and respected by pupils, colleagues and those in educational circles and retired from Maghaberry in 1986.

The former Headmaster was very active in his local churches. He was a member of the Select Vestry of St Matthews for over 50 years and served in that time as treasurer, FWO secretary, choir member, bowler and much more. He was involved in the Lagan Valley and Masonic bowling clubs and was active in the community.

Mr McAuley was a member of the masonic for over 60 years and was a member of the Brethren of Broomhedge Star of the North ML No 335 and Broomhedge RAC 335.

He was regularly involved in the Electoral service, his good humour and dedication made him friends in all he undertook. He is greatly missed by his wife Lil, daughter Linda and her husband Michael, by grandchildren Andrew and Kathy and by his wider family circle and friends.
