Service suspended

FREE neutering of dogs in Londonderry has been suspended by the Dog’s Trust due to financial overspend but it is hoped this will be resumed in the New Year.

The revelation was made in the latest report to Derry City Council’s Environmental Services Committee by the Chief Environmental Health Officer.

He also advised that there were six attacks on people by dogs in the city during October and one attack on livestock.

Equally, there were 40 stray dog complaints and eight reports of fouling. There was a total of 16 other complaints. During October 26 stray dogs were impounded; 13 dogs were reclaimed; nine were unwanted; 13 were sold or rehomed and nine were humanely destroyed. One fixed penalty was served on a reckless dog owner during the month.

But the report notes that no neutering vouchers were issued as “The Dogs Trust have currently suspended their free neutering vouchers due to a financial overspend. It is hoped that these resume in the New Year.”
