Seven fatal collisions on ‘Antrim line’ since dualling

North Antrim MLA and TUV leader, Jim Allister received the figures in response to a direct query made to the PSNI in the wake of the recent tragedy which claimed the life of Ahoghill woman, Averill Dempster.

Mr. Allister was also told that two of these accidents had occurred near to the notorious Woodgreen Road junction.

The total number of accidents on the route was not included in the police reply.

Ballymena Council has also called on Transport Minister Danny Kennedy for a ‘full safety review’ of a section of the carriageway.

And this call was echoed by Mid & East Antrim Councillor, Stuart McDonald, who said the tragic loss of Mrs. Dempster had stunned his home village and made him acutely aware of the need to do all in his powers to probe the safety record on the main raod.

He added: “The junction at Woodgreen has acquired a black spot reputation over the years. Many people approach this stretch of the road with a real sense of trepidation.

“Anyone who uses the road will be well aware of just how many times this stretch has had to be closed in the wake of collisions. Hopefully the authorities will look for ways to address this problem.”
