Sex charges accused further remanded

A Ballintoy man charged with a series of sex offences including alleged incidents against children has been further remanded in custody.

Samuel Smylie (58),of Larrybane Park, is accused of 18 charges relating to three individuals - two males and a female - between 2009 and June 7 this year.

The charges include three of rape against a male; nine of sexual assault; two charges of false imprisonment; two charges of indecent assault on a male and one charge of gross indecency with a male and a charge of causing or inciting a child under the age of 13 - a boy - to engage in sexual activity.

A previous court was told by a defence solicitor a bail address “fell through”.

The accused appeared at Coleraine Magistrates Court on Monday June 27 via video link from Maghaberry Prison and was using a crutch.

A prosecutor said a full file in the case has been requested and it is due to be submitted by September 11.

No bail application was made and the case was adjourned to July 25.

A FULL file regarding charges - including alleged possession of a knife in a public place - faced by a man with a Ballycastle address is due in September, a prosecutor has told Coleraine Magistrates Court.

Jack Heffernan (21), of Glentaisie Drive, faces seven charges relating to May 28 this year.

He is charged with making threats to kill two males and also faces two counts of attempted grievous bodily harm with intent.

He is also charged with causing criminal damage to a male’s car.

The accused is also accused of having an offensive weapon - a knife - at Castle Street, Ballycastle and is charged with disorderly behaviour at Castle Street and Glentaisie Drive.

He has yet to indicate pleas in relation to the charges.

He appeared in court on Monday June 27 and his case has been adjourned to September 5.

ARREST WARRANT

An arrest warrant was issued at Coleraine Magistrates Court on Monday June 27 for a Ballycastle man due to be sentenced for offences including having a spade as an offensive weapon in a public place.

Patrick Gerard McGothigan (28), of Ramoan Gardens, did not appear in the court room when his name was called.

A defence lawyer said sentencing had previously been deferred.

McGothigan had the spade at Stroanshesk Park, Ballycastle where he was also disorderly on June 9 last year. He also assaulted a male and a female.

CANNABIS POSSESSION

A MAN with a Dunseverick address has admitted possessing cannabis in the run up to Christmas last year.

Dylan Lynch (21), of Whitepark Road, was in possession of the Class B drugs on December 16.

He appeared at Coleraine Magistrates Court on Monday June 27.

His case has been adjourned to July 11.

ASSAULT CONTEST

A DATE has been set for a man from Donnelly Park near Ballymoney to contest charges of assaulting three males and a further charge of disorderly behaviour.

Derek Crawford (48) is accused of the assaulting the three males on April 20 this year and being disorderly at Raceview Drive, Ballymoney.

He appeared at Coleraine Magistrates Court on Monday June 27 and the case was adjourned to August 1.
