SF announce candidates

Sinn Féin have recently held selection conventions and announced their candidates for the May 5th council elections to Bann Valley .

The Sinn Féin candidates for the area which includes Dunloy, Rasharkin and Cloughmills will be current councillors Philip McGuigan and Cathal McLaughlin along with new candidate Leanne Peacock- a young woman from Rasharkin. At the last election in 2005 Sinn Féin returned two councillors for this area and are confident of increasing on that figure this time round.

Current Sinn Féin group leader on Ballymoney Borough Council Philip Mc Guigan said: “The Sinn Féin vote in this area has increased from 13% to 34% in the eight years between 1997 and the last council elections in 2005. It is obvious that the Nationalist and Republican people of Dunloy, Cloughmills and Rasharkin clearly recognise the efforts and commitment that Sinn Féin puts in on their behalf.

“I would hope that the electorate’s faith and support will continue to grow at this election so that with increased representation on the council we can work even harder and bring about greater change.”

Sinn Féin Assembly candidate Daithí McKay said after the conventions: “I’m impressed with the depth of quality that we have selected to represent us in the forthcoming elections. I know all of them well and can guarantee they will work without fail for anyone who contacts them.”

Mr McKay concluded by adding: “We all have a lot of work to do between now and May 5th but I think we have made a strong start and can increase our share of the vote so that we can continue to give people the strong service that is hallmark Sinn Féin, but at the end of the day we are very aware that is up to the voters to decide.”
