WATERSIDE Sinn Féin councillor Lynn Fleming has condemned those responsible for hurling sectarian abuse at a U14 football soccer team from Newbuildings taking part in a match at the Daisyfield playing fields in Londonderry

Councillor Fleming said: "This must have been a very frightening experience for these youngsters.

"I outrightly condemn the small number of individuals behind hurling sectarian abuse at them.

"It's totally wrong and should never have happened. People should be able to go and play sport in any part of our city without having to face sectarian or racist harassment.

"Those behind these sort of incidents cannot be allowed to undo the sterling work carried by the many people who run the soccer leagues and competitions here

"If we are to build a society in Derry where there is respect for all cultures and traditions there can be no place for intolerance or making excuses for those who demonstrate such attitudes in their behaviour."
