SF posters 'insult dead'

THE placement of Sinn Féin election posters on lights built into The Diamond War Memorial are an insult to all those who died during both World Wars, according to a resident of the Fountain.

William Jackson said the placement of Westminster candidate, Martina Anderson's posters at the Cenotaph was equivalent to "sticking two fingers up to the war dead".

Mr Jackson also said that both Protestant and Catholic names were dedicated on the Cenotaph and called the positioning of the posters a "desecration".

When asked for their response to the complaint, a Sinn Fin spokesman told the Sentinel: "It's called democracy and unionism needs to get used to it. The Diamond doesn't belong to any one section of the people of Derry."

Last week, an election profile of Ms Anderson highlighted that she had held several key positions within the Sinn Fin party, including the post of Director of Unionist Engagement and Equality and Human Rights spokesperson.

The election material also highlighted that she was raised in family with a Catholic mother and a Protestant father.

However, William Jackson said: "I feel this is sticking two fingers up to our war dead."

The Fountain resident also said: "This city is supposed to be making a bid for City of Culture. What sort of cultural message is this giving to visitors to the town?"
