Shakespeare to stay in the park

An annual outdoor showing of one of William Shakespeare’s plays is to remain in Shaftesbury Park this summer despite proposals to move the event to Carrickfergus Castle.

A free production of the bard’s comedy Much Ado About Nothing is set to amuse audiences at the park on August 2.

Consistently a popular addition to the summer events calendar in the borough, the outdoor production is taking place as part of Love Parks Week.

Visitors will be encouraged take along a picnic basket and make the most of the green space.

Previous years have seen the venue host a variety of Shakespearean works, including A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Twelfth Night and The Taming of The Shrew.

At a meeting of the council’s Arts and Events Sub-committee on January 22, it was suggested that this year’s outdoor theatre be moved to the castle as part of an ongoing innovation pilot which sought to bring an increased number of events to the medieval landmark.

The play will take place from 7.30pm-10pm, with gates opening at 6.30pm.
