Our retrospective photo feature in last week’s Londonderry Sentinel has caused quite a stir, with people telephoning or calling in with details.

Among our regular contributors to get in touch was Waterside historian Ian Bartlett, who provided us with information on a number of last week’s pictures. He was able to tell us that on Page 27 ‘Photo 1’ was taken in Brooke Park during the visit of King George VI, Queen Elizabeth and Princess Elizabeth on July 19, 1945. The Mayor was Sir Basil McFarland. The same information applied to ‘Photo 3’ on the same page.

“Photos 2 and 7 record the visit of Field-Marshal Earl Alexander of Tunis. He is pictured with the then Dean of Derry, Richard King and the Mayor, Sir Basil McFarland. Possibly 1945,” said Ian. “Photo 8 shows the Empire Picture Frame Works which was situated in Newmarket Street. On Page 29, ‘Photo 5’ is of one of the local Home Guard Companies at Ebrington Barracks after their “Stand Down” parade in 1944. On Page 30 ‘Photo 3’ is the Empire Picture Frame Works and Photo 5 is Foyle Street showing the premises of John R Hastings & Co. On page 31, photo 3 is Waterloo Place, showing Holmes & Mullin’s shop with the Golden Teapot and William Gailey’s Stationery shop. The photo on page 32 is not Shipquay Street. The statue of Sir Robert Ferguson stood at the top of Shipquay Street in front of the Corporation Hall in the Diamond. This photo shows a side view of the Hall. Semple & Thompson’s shop was in Ferryquay Street.”
