Sharp rise injobless total

THE number of people registering as out of work rose sharply in Lisburn in January.

According to statistics released by the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment, the number of people unemployed rose by 7.5% during the month - an increase of over 200 people since December.

Over the last year unemployment in Lisburn has gone up by 8.4%. In January a total of 3,445 people claimed unemployment benefit in the city, 240 more than the previous month.

In Northern Ireland as a whole there are 62,326 people claiming unemployment benefit, just over 5% of the working age population.
