'Sheer determination' helps Mary gain degree

A NEWTOWNABBEY woman who battled dyslexia, dyscalculia and depression to gain her degree at the age of 40 is now planning to use her experience to help others.

Mary O’Brien from Hollybrook in Glengormley, who has graduated from Queen’s with a 2:1 Honours degree in Psychology, is now intending to continue her education by training as a cognitive behavioural therapist.

She said: “I left school with two O-Levels and worked in a number of secretarial roles. I used to think I was stupid, although I always had ambitions to pursue my education. I went on to do an Access course and was fortunate enough to be accepted by Queen’s. It wasn’t until my first year at university that I was formally diagnosed with dyslexia and dyscalculia.

“The Disabilities Services staff at Queen’s were amazing, they were incredibly supportive. Their help, and sheer determination, drove me on and I am delighted to be graduating. I hope my story is an example to others that you should never give up.”
