Shock after pedestrian dies in Ballycastle road accident

Police have confirmed that a woman, aged in her 50s, has died following a one vehicle road accident on the Ramoan Road in Ballycastle.

The collision was reported to police just after 4.45pm yesterday and involved a silver Toyota Avensis.

The deceased woman was a pedestrian.

Part of the Ramoan Road was closed to traffic but has since reopened.

SDLP North Antrim representative Connor Duncan said the death has shocked local people.

He added: “My thoughts are first and foremost with this woman’s family and friends at this very difficult time. The Ballycastle community is in shock but I have no doubt that they will rally around the family as they mourn the loss of a loved one.”

Alliance candidate for North Antrim Patricia O’Lynn has offered her sympathy to the family of the deceased woman, adding: “This was a tragic accident in which a woman lost her life. It is an incredibly sad time for the family and I send them my deepest sympathies as they deal with this tragedy. My thoughts are also with the emergency services who attended the scene.”

Inspector O’Brien said: “I would ask anyone who witnessed this rtc, or the car or pedestrian in the run up to the collision, to contact Coleraine Police Station or the Collision Investigation Unit on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 909 of 13/02/17.”
