Shock at Longlands murder

THERE has been shock and condemnation following a fatal shooting in the Longlands area on Thursday night (October 26).

It’s believed the victim, named locally as Daniel McKay, was shot dead on the Longlands Road around 8.30pm.

The 36 year old was a father of one and lived with his fiancée and her two children in the area close to the shooting.

Locals in the area have said they heard a number of shots, possibly six, before police arrived at the scene shortly after.

Police have said they believed at least two men were involved in the shooting.

Following the attack a silver Volkswagen car, hijacked earlier in the evening, was found burnt out in west Belfast. Police are investigating a link to the murder.

Alliance councillor for the area, Billy Webb said: “I am shocked at this tragic loss of life and extend my sympathy to the family and I totally condemn those who killed this young man.

“The people of Longlands have suffered many times in the past years with similar incidents both within the area and outside.

“They are shocked and saddened that once again there has been a loss of life because of someone else’s actions.

“The circumstances behind this killing aren’t yet known but, whatever they might be, nothing can excuse the taking of life.

“I call on anyone who has information which might lead to finding those responsible to contact the PSNI.”

John McPoland of the NI Ambulance Service said: “About half past eight tonight we received reports of a shooting incident in the Longlands Road area.

“We sent a response vehicle and two accident and emergency vehicles and we didn’t take anybody to hospital.”

Police have appealed for information in relation to the attack, they can be contacted on 0845 600 8000.
