Shock overrubbish dumped along tow path

A LISBURN photographer says people are ‘shocked’ by rubbish being left strewn along the Lagan Towpath.

Tom Porter took photographs of the rubbish, contacted the Star and questioned who was responsible for cleaning the area.

“I was out walking the dog along the tow path, as a lot of people do,” he explained. “I met an elderly couple from Hillsborough walking in the opposite direction and they brought it to my attention.

“They said they had never walked that part of the tow path before and were shocked. They said they would never walk there again.

“It is really atrocious and must attract rats and vermin,” he added, “People should have more respect for the area.”

Following the complaint, Lisburn City Council investigated and confirmed they were aware of the situation.

“The Council wrote to the private landowner on February 3 requiring them to arrange for the removal of the waste that is lying on their property,” explained a spokesperson for the council.

“The landowner has 21 days to clear the waste from the site. If the site is not cleared within that time the Council will take further action,” she added.
