POLICE have expressed concern over what appears to have been an 'organised theft' in which a substantial amount of footwear was stolen.

The shop lifting incident took place at a shoe shop on Main Street, Ballymoney, over a period of time on Saturday afternoon.

It is believed that the group of three females and one male, made off with 14 pairs of boots and four pairs of shoes.

After the suspects made a number of visits to the shop, after 2.30pm staff discovered that the items had been taken.

Police would like to speak to anyone who may have seen anyone with footwear/shoe boxes on Saturday afternoon, especially a female, thought to have been in her 50s with short dark hair.

The two other females, thought to have been connected with the theft, were wearing grey clothing, and are in their 20s.

The male was wearing a mustard coloured coat.

The suspects are not thought to have been local, police said.

After receiving the complaint, police spent a considerable amount of time searching the town and speaking to other shop workers warning them of the theft and asking if they had seen the group.

Police are trying to establish whether or not there was a vehicle involved and if so, where it was parked.

One local trader said: “We have not had organised shoplifting gangs in this area for quite a time and it was amazing the amount of shoes they got away with. One theory is that the shoes were being handed out the door of the shop and those involved were believed to be from outside the town and they certainly seemed to hot-foot it out of Ballymoney with their ill-gotten gains.”

The PSNI is appealing for information on 08456008000 or contact the Crimestoppers number on 0800555111.
