Shooting days after McGibbon murder shows disregard for community

Civic leaders in Londonderry have said the shooting of a young man in Creggan days after Michael McGibbon bled to death in a lane in Ardoyne shows the disregard those behind the attacks have for people living in their communities.

The Unity of Purpose group, which is comprised of local politicians alongside, statutory, business and community representatives, unreservedly condemned last night’s shooting in the Magowan Park area of Creggan.

In a statement the group said: “Reprehensible acts like this are to be condemned on all occasions but given the shooting and subsequent death of Michael McGibbon, in a similar attack in Belfast on Friday night, this attack shows how little regard that these people have for the lives of people within our community.

“We stand by the adage ‘if you hurt one of us, you hurt us all’ therefore this attack is an attack against the people of this city.

“We urge anyone who has any information on this attack to contact the PSNI so that the perpetrators can be brought before the courts.”
