Shop front scheme extended

A SUCCESSFUL scheme which put a new face onto shop fronts in Lurgan is to be extended to the Tullygally area.

Some 10,000 has been earmarked towards improving the shop fronts in the shopping complex.

The scheme will involve replastering and repainting existing shop fronts with traders providing 50 per cent of the cost.

Further funding has also been provided to remove graffiti in the area and the council is considering planting shrubbery and foliage.

The work is expected to be completed by the end of March.

At a recent council meeting councillors welcomed the scheme.

Councillor Mairead O'Dowd said: "This has been a success in Lurgan and I am glad to see it has moved on to the Tullygally area. However, I would ask council to consider extending the scheme to more rural areas."

Alderman Sydney Anderson also asked if Portadown could be considered for the scheme.

Development director, Olga Murtagh said funding for the scheme had been allocated, however, further shop front improvements were under consideration and more areas were to benefit from the scheme.

Last year shops in Lurgan were handed funds to improve their shop fronts.
