Shops sold cigarettes to children

THREE shops were caught selling cigarettes to children during spot checks in Londonderry this summer.

According to Derry City Council’s Chief Environmental Officer’s report for October a test purchasing exercise was carried out at the end of June to ascertain levels of compliance with the law regarding the sale of tobacco products to young people.

“In three premises the child was sold cigarettes and formal cautions were subsequently issued, in two cases to the proprietor and in one case to the shop assistant. All three formal cautions were accepted and signed,” the report stated.
