The injured animal was discovered in a pool of blood on the A8 near the Highways Hotel, around 7.30 am, on Tuesday morning.

A kind-hearted motorist gently lifted the bleeding animal into his car and took it to Clare Vets, in Ballyclare.

His wife Gillian McDade said that the animal needed urgent treatment for injuries which the vet said had been caused by an air rifle.

She said that the cat, which required an operation, was in a very distressed state when found.

Gillian is trying to find the pet’s owner. The cat is male, neutered but not microchipped and is otherwise in good health.

Gillian can be contacted by ringing 07753 987576.
