Showstoppers back at Forum forSt John Ambulance and Jennifer

It’s ‘Showstoppers’ time again. Londonderry Musical Society and the Britannia Concert Band have once again combined forces to present their 27th season of Charity Concerts in the Millennium Forum on Friday, November 27.
Members of  Londonderry Musical Societys Showstoppers, rehearse ahead of their performances in November in various locations including, on Wednesday the 18th in Strabane Junior Academy, Friday 20th in Limavady High School, Thursday 26th in Coleraine High School, Friday the 27th in the Millennium Forum in Derry and Saturday the 28th of November in The Marine Hotel in Ballycastle. This year the collaboration will be in support of two very worthy local charities: ‘Jennifer’s Journey’ and ‘St John Ambulance.’

The latter cause will be well known to Londonderry Sentinel readers.

But the former is also a great charity and is aimed at supporting young Eglinton gymnast Jennifer Smyth who has been in a wheelchair after falling and breaking her neck two years ago.

This year’s show will also be performed in Strabane, Limavady, Coleraine and Ballycastle for local charities. there.

And over nearly three decades of entertaining the concerts have raised an awful lot of money for countless good causes.

Londonderry Musical Society Treasurer Christine Deane explained: “We have raised to date, well in excess of £200,000 for local charities through these concerts over the 27 years.”

They’ll also be warming up with another special collaboration a few days before the Britannia gig.

“The LMS choir were also selected from a large number of local choirs to perform alongside the ‘world famous tenor’ Russell Watson who is performing in the Millennium Forum as part of his UK tour - this concert is being staged on the same week on November 25,” explained Christine.

Shows featured this year include classics such as Carousel, Wonderful Town, Les Misérables, A Chorus Line, Wicked, Me and My Girl, The Lion King with highlights from the music of The Beatles, Sondheim, Procol Harum, Queen, Andrew Lloyd Webber and a host of other celebrity composers. Highlights this year include the beautiful trio ‘I Wish I May’ from ‘The Witches of Eastwick’ and ‘Gabriel’s Oboe’ by Ennio Morricone. The musical direction is once more in the hands of Jim Goodman and Noel Barr.
