Signage tells story of Carrick-built schooner Result

One of the most popular attractions at the seafront location is the magnificent ship which is the centrepiece of the playpark.

The play unit represents a real ship, Result, the last schooner constructed by local shipbuilder Paul Rodgers more than 120 years ago.

Local resident Christopher Kenny, who has been instrumental in keeping the story of shipbuilding in Carrickfergus alive, has a particular affection for the Result.

The Carrickfergus Grammar School student is a founder member of the Result Appreciation Society, which was established to promote the story of Carrick shipbuilding and the vessel in particular.

Recognising that many young children who play on the Result replica do not know the significance of the structure, Christopher approached the former Carrickfergus Council to suggest that some signage on the structure would help to tell the story of Result.

It was also hoped that it would interest children in the shipbuilding and maritime heritage of the town.

The sub-committee was in full agreement and tasked officers to work alongside Christopher to produce and install signage designed to educate local young people about our maritime heritage.

The signage is in place ahead of the summer season with the hope that many young residents will have the opportunity to learn more about the vessel.
