Signed and captioned Shawshank performances

TWO special performances of The Shawshank Redemption for Deaf, deafened and hard of hearing patrons will take place in the Millenium Forum in Londonderry next month.

An ISL and BSL Signed Performance of this critically acclaimed show will take place on Thursday, June 3 at 8pm, followed by a Captioned Performance on Friday, June 4 at 8pm.

The Shawshank Redemption is based on Stephen King’s novel Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. This iconic story inspired the award winning film and is now adapted for the stage by Owen O’Neill and Dave Johns.

Following a hugely successful season in Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre, where it received an almost unbroken run of standing ovations, this production also opened in London’s West End for its UK premiere last September to rave reviews.

Andy Dufresne is a young and successful banker whose life changes drastically when he is convicted of murdering his wife and her lover and sentenced to life imprisonment in the notorious Shawshank Prison.

The captioned show of ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ is presented in association with the Northern Ireland Theatre Association (NITA). Captioning is similar to television subtitling and gives deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people access to live performance.

The actors’ words appear on a display screen on the stage at the same time as they are spoken or sung. Speaker names, sound effects, offstage noises and music descriptions are also shown allowing you to follow all the action.
