'Significant find' in border area search

It is understood police in the Republic of Ireland discovered what they called a "significant amount" of items including ammunition during planned searches in County Donegal.

The searches were believed to have taken place on a road between Killea and Bridgend just across the border from Londonderry.

A Garda spokesperson said they had also found what they believed were the components of an explosive device.

The Gardai were assisted by an Irish Army Bomb Disposal Unit during the operation.

The searches were going on in a field and there were no evacuations of any homes involved at time of going to press.
