Signs depict town’s history and culture

Lurgan’s fascinating history has been immortalised in new modern signs erected throughout the town.

The signs, which depict Lurgan’s rich cultural history as well as the town’s origins, were the brainchild of Craigavon Borough Council and Lurgan Revitalisation Action Group.

Funded by the Northern Ireland Executive, the signs are designed to complement the recent regeneration of the town centre through the public realm works

The new signs are situated in William Street, Market Street and High Street.

They include historical information on subjects such as the town’s thriving linen market, the bustling banks and street history.

They also detail the historic built environment and the fascinating origins of Lurgan.

Chair of the development committee, Councillor Carla Lockhart said: “We are delighted with these exciting new additions to the town centre. Lurgan has a vibrant past and these signs showcase all of its wonderful hidden treasures and chronicles the town’s famous past industries, including its busy linen trade. They are dotted throughout the town and are the perfect read when you are out and about shopping.”

The Lurgan Revitalisation initiative is funded by Northern Ireland Executive, through the Department for Social Development (DSD) and coordinated by Craigavon Borough Council in partnership with the Lurgan Revitalisation Action Committee and DSD.
