Simpson backs drugs misuse motions

TWO motions in the House of Commons tackling the issue of mephedrone misuse are being backed by Upper Bann MP, David Simpson.

The motions call on the government to make the sale of ‘ legal highs’ such as mephedrone, which is banned in some European countries, an offence.

Mr Simpson said: “The scourge of drug abuse has been a source of much heartache over recent years with young lives scarred, ruined and ended.

“Possible side effects of mephedrone include anxiety and paranoia, heart palpitations and fits or seizures. If snorted, it can lead to severe nosebleeds. As with many substances, regular use can lead to the development of a compulsive habit.

“Trade in this kind of incremental death is something that needs to be tackled. I welcome the move on the part of the Home Secretary to do that.”
