Simpson in challenge to Gardiner

UPPER Bann MP David Simpson has again appealed to the UUP's Sam Gardiner to spell out where he stands on the principle of maximising unionist co-operation at the next Assembly election.

Recently UUP MLA George Savage was commended by Mr Simpson for adopting a positive approach to the DUP in Upper Bann towards greater unionist co-operation at future elections.

Mr Simpson said: “Our position is well known and has been consistent – unionists should seek to maximise the number of unionist MLAs returned to the Assembly and should also seek to maximise unionist strength at all levels. I welcomed the fact that George Savage was now saying the same thing.”

He added: “It is disappointing that to date Sam has chosen to remain silent on this important issue. I would appeal to Sammy to make his position on the matter clear.”

Mr Simpson said he appealed to Mr Gardiner to indicate his support for or opposition to greater co-operation with the DUP and other fellow unionists.
